Caloura: the Fishing Village That Escaped the 1522 Cataclysm
Some fishing villages are just a pier and a few boats. Caloura is more than that: a cove sheltered by a 16th-century convent, which survived one of the greatest natural disasters in Azorean history.
A name born from refugee friars
The name “Caloura” comes from the hermit friars who fled Furnas after the 1630 volcanic eruption and settled in the small convent of Vale de Cabaços. Known as “calouros,” the place eventually took its name from that term.
One of the oldest convents in the Azores
Around 1440, hermit Joanne Anes built a small chapel here dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. In 1522, the year of the earthquake and catastrophic landslide that destroyed Vila Franca do Campo, then the island’s capital, Caloura’s sheltered area escaped the cataclysm. Caloura Convent, classified as a Site of Public Interest since 2008, still holds ties to the devotion of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres — the image that would later move to the Convent of Esperança, in Ponta Delgada.
A fort that defended the harbour
Next to the convent stands the Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Caloura Battery, built to defend the harbour and convent from pirate and corsair attacks, common along this stretch of coast. Today, both the fort and convent are privately owned, surrounded by vineyards shielded by dry-stone walls.
A cove of clear waters
Caloura is best known today for its natural pools and blue coastline, framed by cliffs and steep slopes between Água de Pau and Vila Franca do Campo. Porto da Caloura, perched atop a tall basalt cliff, still serves recreational boats and local fishermen.
