Gruta do Carvão: the Lava Tunnel Hidden Beneath Ponta Delgada

While most visitors photograph São Miguel’s lagoons and fumaroles above ground, an entire world of volcanic history remains hidden right beneath the feet of anyone strolling through Ponta Delgada.

The island’s largest lava tunnel

Formed more than ten thousand years ago, Gruta do Carvão is the largest known lava tube on São Miguel, stretching 1,912 metres, divided into four sections: Paím, Tobacco Dryers, João do Rego, and José Bensaúde. Some historical records and fieldwork suggest the tunnel may actually extend up to five kilometres, though much of it remains inaccessible.

From waste dump to Natural Monument

In 1994, the ecological association Amigos dos Açores began the first serious explorations of the cave, recognising its speleological value. Between 1995 and 2006, it took removing 22 tonnes of soil, waste, and debris that had built up over decades, mostly near the entrances. The effort paid off: in May 2005, Gruta do Carvão was classified as a Regional Natural Monument by the Government of the Azores.

Stalactites, lava bridges, and striated walls

In the Paím section, open to the public, visitors can see lava stalactites and stalagmites, side benches, lava bridges, striated walls, and petrified gas bubbles — an almost complete catalogue of the features that define a basaltic lava tube.

Described for centuries by chroniclers and naturalists

As early as 1821, traveller John White Webster documented this cave’s existence in the Arrifes area. Decades later, naturalist George Hartung also described it in detail, and author Emygdio da Silva called it, in 1893, “the most remarkable of the Azores’ volcanic tunnels.”

The cave can be visited year-round, since the interior temperature stays stable regardless of the season.
