Climate in the Azores
The Azores have a temperate oceanic climate, with mild temperatures year-round and high humidity that keeps the landscape green in every season. It’s an unpredictable climate — sun, cloud and rain can alternate within a few hours — but rarely extreme.
Temperatures throughout the year
Temperatures vary little between winter and summer: between 14°C and 18°C in the coldest months (December to March) and between 20°C and 26°C in summer (June to September). Sea temperature follows the same mild pattern, between 15°C and 23°C.
Rain and sunshine
There isn’t really a “dry season” in the Azores — rain is possible in any month, though it’s more frequent between October and March. The most consistent sunny days are concentrated between June and September, the season most sought after by first-time visitors.
How climate varies between islands
Despite their geographic closeness, the climate can vary from island to island, and even within the same island, depending on altitude and exposure to wind — it’s not unusual to find sun on the coast and clouds inland, just a few kilometres away.
