Congro Lagoon: the Hidden Lake Inside a 3,800-Year-Old Crater
Most of São Miguel’s lakes sit atop volcanic cones, visible from a distance. Congro Lagoon is the exception: it hides inside a huge hole in the landscape, invisible until you reach its very shore.
A crater formed 3,800 years ago
Congro Lagoon resulted from a phreatomagmatic explosion that occurred about 3,800 to 3,900 years ago, when rising magma met groundwater levels in the underlying formations. Unlike most of the island’s craters, which sit atop elevations, this one is nestled in a “hole” within the surrounding Achada das Furnas area, between the Fogo and Furnas volcanoes.
An almost perfectly circular shape
With a perimeter of about 1,250 metres and depths reaching 16 metres, the lake is surrounded by dense trees that completely hide the crater walls — making it hard to see from any nearby high point.
A garden shaped by José do Canto
Over time, the land around the lagoon passed into the hands of two families, including the Canto family. José do Canto, a defining figure in 19th-century São Miguel landscaping, is believed to have helped transform the surroundings into a forest garden, introducing exotic species like eucalyptus and azalea, alongside native Azorean laurel.
Carp introduced in 1890
Two fish species now live in the lagoon’s depths: carp, introduced in 1890, and perch. In the past, residents of Vila Franca do Campo used to celebrate St. John’s Day here, on 24 June, with dances and picnics by the water.

- Access: dirt road followed by a roughly 700-metre hiking trail (15-minute descent).
- Footwear: proper trail shoes recommended, as the path can get muddy.
- Signage: follow signs for “Lagoa do Congro” from the road to Furnas.
Best time to visit
Visit before dusk, since the dense surrounding vegetation significantly reduces light levels inside the crater.
Nearby highlights
Lagoa dos Nenúfares, smaller and harder to reach, sits very close by, though it requires extra care to access.
After Congro Lagoon, head to Vila Franca do Campo or the Furnas area, both a short distance away, to continue exploring São Miguel’s volcanic interior.
