Gorreana Tea Factory: Europe’s Oldest Working Tea Plantation

Europe isn’t known for growing tea — except in one small corner of the Atlantic, where an Azorean family has kept alive, for five generations, the continent’s only working tea plantation.

An alternative to the orange crisis

The Gorreana Tea Factory, in the parish of Maia, Ribeira Grande municipality, was founded in 1883 by Ermelinda Pacheco Gago da Câmara. Tea cultivation emerged as an economic alternative when orange exports, then the island’s main business, collapsed in the late 19th century. The Micaelense Agricultural Promotion Society even brought two Chinese technicians from Macau in 1878 to teach cultivation and processing techniques.

100% organic tea, no pesticides

São Miguel’s humid climate, mild and steady temperatures, and acidic volcanic soil create ideal conditions for Camellia sinensis, the plant from which both black and green tea come. A natural advantage: common tea pests don’t survive the island’s climate, allowing Gorreana to produce tea without any chemicals whatsoever.

1840s machines still running

Harvesting is still done entirely by hand, and much of the processing machinery dates back to 1840, still used with the same technique employed by the first of the five generations who have run the plantation. The estate now covers about 32 hectares and produces roughly 33 tonnes of tea per year.

International recognition

In 2012, the family matriarch, Bertha Meireles-Hintze, received a Medal of Merit for her efforts in keeping Gorreana a family business. The tea is now exported to countries such as Germany, the United States, France, Italy, Brazil, and Japan — sometimes better known abroad than in mainland Portugal.

Best time to visit

Any time of year works for a visit, but seeing the factory in full operation (on weekdays) adds extra interest to the experience.
