Ilhéu da Baleia and Ponta da Barca Lighthouse: Graciosa’s Stone Whale
Nature doesn’t always need human help to create a symbol. On Graciosa, a simple volcanic vent, eroded by the sea, took on a shape so whale-like that it now literally decorates the packaging of the island’s queijadas.
The remains of a dismantled volcanic cone
Ilhéu da Baleia is what’s left of the central feeder conduit of an ancient volcanic cone, dismantled by intense marine erosion of the original pyroclastic cone. Made of reddish basalt rock, the islet sits in a small cove within Ponta da Barca Bay, Santa Cruz da Graciosa municipality.
An Important Bird Area
Classified as a Protected Area for Habitat or Species Management and part of the Ilhéu da Baleia and Ponta da Barca Bay IBA, the site is internationally recognised for its value to the region’s seabird life.
The tallest lighthouse in the Azores
Next to the islet stands Ponta da Barca Lighthouse, operating since 1 February 1930. With a 23-metre cylindrical tower, set atop a 24-metre cliff, its light beam reaches 71 metres above sea level — the highest in the entire Azorean archipelago. Its light range reaches 37 km, with the tower painted in black and white bands and a red lantern, automated since 1999.
