Ilhéu de Vila Franca: the Natural Pool Inside a Sunken Volcano

Rate this article

Seen from above, Ilhéu de Vila Franca looks like a ring lost in the middle of the Atlantic. Up close, it’s even more striking: an ancient submerged volcano whose crater, flooded by the sea, formed a near-perfectly circular natural pool.

A volcano more than four thousand years old

The islet is a hydromagmatic volcanic cone, heavily eroded by the sea and tectonic movements, with activity dating back more than four thousand years. Its walls, made of palagonite tuff, feature large columnar structures and several underwater cavities explored by divers.

An almost perfectly circular lagoon

Inside the islet lies a natural lake, connected to the sea through a narrow opening called Boquete, facing north, which keeps out waves from the open ocean. The result is calm, crystal-clear water, ideal for swimming, snorkelling, or simply watching the protected marine life — from damselfish to octopus and dusky groupers.

A nature reserve with access rules

Classified as a Protected Area, the islet can only be visited between June and October, with a limited number of visitors per day. Access is exclusively by boat from the Vila Franca do Campo pier, a crossing of about ten minutes. The only permanent residents are seabirds, including the Cory’s shearwater, a protected species whose nesting is one of the reasons behind the site’s classification.

Planning your visit

  • Ticket: about €8 per person, including the return boat trip.
  • Schedule: regular departures between 10am and 6pm, depending on the season.
  • Trails: the longest runs about 2.5 km, offering a look at the islet’s vegetation and geology.

Best time to visit

Summer, between July and August, brings warmer water and calmer seas for the boat crossing.

Nearby highlights

Before or after your visit, climb up to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz for a panoramic view over the islet, and try the traditional queijadas da Vila, a sweet pastry typical of Vila Franca do Campo.

After the islet, explore more of São Miguel’s south coast or head inland to the volcanic scenery around Lagoa do Fogo.
