Monte Carneiro Viewpoint: 360º Over Horta Bay
Some viewpoints show a view. Others show an entire summary of an island. Monte Carneiro belongs to the second category: from up there, you can see practically everything that makes Faial what it is.
An old volcanic cone above the city
At 267 metres above sea level — some sources say 287 metres — Monte Carneiro is an extinct volcanic cone overlooking the city of Horta. Access is by car along a narrow but passable road, leading to a viewpoint fitted with interpretive panels identifying the main points of interest in view.
The entire bay in one glance
From the top, the 360º panoramic view takes in all of Horta Bay, flanked by the Espalamaca headland on one side and Monte Queimado and Monte da Guia on the other, including Horta Marina and the Porto Pim area. Inland, you can see the Flamengos Valley, ringed by green slopes, and, unmistakably in the background, the towering Pico Mountain.
A living postcard, always in motion
Unlike many static viewpoints, Monte Carneiro offers a scene that’s constantly changing: cargo ships, fishing boats, passenger ferries, yachts, and international regatta sailboats continuously cross the bay below, making every visit slightly different from the last.
One of the best spots for sunrise
On clear-sky days, sunrise over Faial with Pico Mountain in the background is described by many visitors as one of the island’s most memorable moments — and, since you can drive right up to the viewpoint, it’s an accessible experience even for those who’d rather not hike before dawn.

- Access: by car, along a narrow road with room to pass; also reachable on foot from Horta, with more effort.
- Facilities: benches and a grassy area, ideal for a picnic.
