Monte da Ajuda: the Fortress Chapel That Once Watched for Whales
Few Azorean viewpoints combine a panoramic view, fortified religious architecture, and a legend of apparitions, all on the same volcanic cone. Monte da Ajuda, west of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, is one of those rare places.
A miniature castle
Atop the hill, at 192 metres, stands the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, dating to the late 15th century. Its architecture — resembling a small castle, with a bell tower and a curved annex — is considered one of the finest examples of fortified religious architecture in the entire Azores.
The legend of the image that wouldn’t stay in the church
Tradition tells that, in a then-uninhabited spot called Caminho Velho, an image of Our Lady mysteriously appeared. Taken to the Mother Church in Santa Cruz, the image vanished from the altar three times, always reappearing where it had first been found — until locals understood the request and built a home for it there.
Three chapels on one hill
Besides the Chapel of Ajuda, the hill holds two more white chapels: São Salvador, from the 18th century, and São João, from the 16th century. Next to the main chapel once stood a whale-watching post, taking advantage of the commanding view over the sea.
A bullring inside the crater
The hill, now almost entirely wooded, holds the town’s bullring within its interior, built inside the old volcanic crater, whose natural amphitheatre shape suits the purpose perfectly. The venue is only used twice a year, during the Festivities of Santo Cristo dos Milagres.
