Museu do Vinho: the Story of Pico’s Vineyard Landscape

Rate this article

In 2004, UNESCO recognised a landscape built from black stone and vines as a World Heritage Site — and that’s the story the Museu do Vinho, in Madalena, tells in detail.

The Pico Island Vineyard Culture Landscape

The Wine Museum occupies a historic building linked to the island’s former wine production, dedicated to preserving the memory of the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

Black stone enclosures

The exhibition explains how Pico’s farmers developed, over centuries, a unique system of small volcanic stone enclosures (currais), built to shelter vines from wind and sea salt, creating the mosaic-like landscape that still covers part of the island’s west coast today.

Winemaking tools and history

Among the pieces on display are old winemaking tools, stills and documents testifying to the historical importance of Pico’s Verdelho wine, once exported across Europe.

Planning your visit

  • Location: Madalena, Pico island.
  • Ticket: paid entry, with access to the permanent exhibition rooms.
  • Hours: subject to seasonal changes; it’s worth confirming before visiting.

Best time to visit

Any time of year suits a museum visit, making it a good option on days less favourable for outdoor activities.

Nearby highlights

Nearby, vineyard enclosures are still in active use today, living proof of the landscape the museum documents.
