Ponta da Ilha Lighthouse: Pico’s Easternmost Point
At the easternmost tip of Pico island, where the São Jorge Channel opens between two islands, a lighthouse marks the headland that for centuries served as a lookout post for Azorean whalers.
Pico’s easternmost point
Ponta da Ilha Lighthouse marks the eastern tip of Pico island, in the Lajes do Pico municipality, right by the entrance to the channel separating Pico from the neighbouring island of São Jorge.
A coastline of whale lookouts
This stretch of coast was once part of a wider network of vigias — lookout posts used until the mid-20th century to spot sperm whales and alert whaling crews, an activity that profoundly shaped Pico’s history and economy.
A view over the São Jorge Channel
From the lighthouse, the view stretches across the sea channel to the silhouette of São Jorge island, at one of the most Atlantic-exposed points along Pico’s entire coastline.
