Ponta do Topo Islet: a Bird Refuge 1.3 Million Years in the Making

Rate this article

On São Jorge’s southeastern tip, a small patch of land separated from the coast by a mere 400 metres holds both geological history and local legend — and, to this day, still receives swimming cattle every summer.

Formed by lava flows over a million years old

Ponta do Topo Islet was formed by lava flows more than 1.32 million years ago, making Ponta do Topo and eastern São Jorge the geologically oldest part of the island. Made of basalt and tuff from the Topo Volcanic Complex, the islet separated from the coast through marine erosion over millennia.

A Special Protection Zone

Classified as a Partial Nature Reserve, with about 12.14 hectares of protected area, the islet is mainly valued for the diversity of its seabird life. It’s also one of the island’s best diving spots, offering good visibility and rich underwater flora and fauna.

The legend of the swimming oxen

A local tradition tells of two oxen destined for a festival that were led swimming to the islet to graze and, upon returning, appeared completely dry, as if they hadn’t crossed the water at all — an episode locals at the time attributed to the intervention of the Holy Spirit, reinforcing the parish’s devotion.

Ponta do Topo Lighthouse

Beside the islet stands Ponta do Topo Lighthouse, operating since 15 July 1927, with a 16-metre tower at 58 metres above sea level. It’s the only lighthouse in São Jorge still staffed by full-time keepers, keeping alive a tradition now rare in the archipelago.

Planning your visit

  • Best season: summer, when cattle are traditionally led swimming to graze on the islet.
  • Activities: diving, birdwatching, photographing the coastal scenery.
  • View: the viewpoint by the lighthouse offers one of the best perspectives over the islet.

Nearby highlights

Vila do Topo, next to the lighthouse, has good local restaurants for trying the island’s cuisine after your visit.

After the islet, continue exploring São Jorge’s eastern coast or head up to Pico da Esperança to see this same landscape from above.
