Ribeira Grande: São Miguel’s Second-Oldest Town

If Ponta Delgada is the capital everyone knows, Ribeira Grande is the town many drive past without stopping — missing out, in doing so, on one of the best-preserved historic centres on the entire island.

Settlers arriving from Madeira in 1474 are believed to have driven the area’s rapid growth. Ponta Delgada was raised to town status in 1499; eight years later, in 1507, it was Ribeira Grande’s turn — though evidence suggests the settlement was already functioning as a town in practice before that official recognition.

Growth interrupted by a seismic disaster

According to chronicler Gaspar Frutuoso, the town’s continued growth was suddenly halted by the severe seismic and volcanic crisis of summer 1563, followed by a catastrophic flood the following winter. The town was rebuilt throughout the 18th century, gaining the urban fabric still recognisable today.

A church with Manueline portals

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Estrela, rebuilt “from the ground up” in 1728 over a 16th-century foundation, follows the most common layout for the island’s churches — three naves and a three-part façade — with a Baroque front considered one of the most remarkable on São Miguel. The Church of Espírito Santo, whose namesake house dates to 1522, is another of the town’s religious landmarks.

A past tied to weaving

The first settlers set up along the stream that still runs through the main square, near the town hall, where they built mills to grind grain. Later, with the contribution of French immigrants, the textile industry also flourished, leaving a legacy of manor houses — such as Solar de São Vicente, now the Culture House.

• What to see: the Church of Nossa Senhora da Estrela, the Church of Espírito Santo, and the “8-eyed” bridge over the stream.
• Access from Ponta Delgada: direct bus in front of the City Gates (lines C102, C110, or C105), about 50 to 70 minutes.
• Accommodation: a good alternative to Ponta Delgada, with less tourist traffic but equivalent amenities.

29 June, a local holiday honouring patron saint Nossa Senhora da Estrela, brings extra energy to the town.
