Santa Catarina Fort: the Stronghold That Repelled 4,000 Men in 1829

Some Azorean forts never fired a shot in anger. Santa Catarina Fort isn’t one of them: it was here, over a few hours of combat, that the fate of Portuguese liberalism was decided.

Built to defend against pirates

Built between 1567 and 1580 — the date inscribed on the entrance gate — the fort followed Italian architect Tommaso Benedetto’s defence plan for the Azores. Located south of Praia da Vitória’s bay, next to today’s Commercial Port, in the parish of Cabo da Praia, it was for centuries one of the largest forts in the entire archipelago, protecting the bay from frequent pirate and corsair attacks.

Four hours under 5,000 shots

On 11 August 1829, an Absolutist fleet with about 4,000 men, 21 ships, and 340 artillery pieces attempted to land in the bay of the former Vila da Praia. The battle began with Miguelist forces shelling the forts of Santa Catarina and Espírito Santo — four hours of combat, with about 5,000 shots fired by the attackers.

The shot that stopped the frigate Diana

It was from Santa Catarina Fort that shots were fired at the frigate Diana, preventing the Absolutist landing and keeping free what would become known as the “fortress island.” The victory, under the command of the Duke of Terceira, was decisive for the rise of liberalism in Portugal — and earned Praia da Vitória the title “Muito Notável” (Most Notable), awarded by Queen Maria II.

A recent exhibition centre

Reopened to the public after restoration works, the fort now holds an exhibition centre dedicated to the Battle of Praia, including a panel with a detailed account of the clash, replica military uniforms from the period, an original Brown Bess rifle — on loan from the Angra do Heroísmo Museum — and a touchscreen with all the information gathered during the site’s historical research.
