Santa Cruz das Flores: the Capital With the Islands’ Only Franciscan Convent

Not every Azorean convent was born from a wartime promise. The Convent of São Boaventura, in Santa Cruz das Flores, is one of those rare cases — built to celebrate a victory that, at the time it was promised, hadn’t even happened yet.

A vow made before the victory

In 1640, Father Inácio Coelho, born on Flores, made a vow: if Portugal managed to restore its independence from Spain, he would set the conditions for founding a convent on the island. Independence was restored that same year, and on 26 June 1641, the deed granting the land for the convent was drawn up — the only religious institution of its kind on the entire island.

Franciscans until liberalism

Franciscan friars, believed to have arrived with the island’s first waves of settlers, remained at the convent until 1832, when Portuguese liberalism abolished religious orders. The building was later sold to private owners, before being restored to house today’s museum.

A cedar ceiling and a 15th-century panel

The church’s interior, a single-nave rectangular building, holds a tempera-painted cedar ceiling, gilded altarpieces, and a panel of the Annunciation of the Virgin, dating to the 15th century — a rare piece of sacred art for such an isolated island.

From Latin classes to royal schools

The Franciscans handled the island’s educational duties for decades, including teaching Latin grammar. That foundation, after the Pombaline reforms, gave rise to Santa Cruz’s first royal schools — a leading educational role the town still holds today, being the only one on the island with a secondary school.

An imposing mother church

Besides the convent, the Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição stands out, built in 1871, with one of the most imposing facades in the entire Azores region.
