Santo Espírito: the Baroque Church Many Call the Most Beautiful in the Azores

Some churches impress with their size, others with their detail. The Church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação, in Santo Espírito, clearly belongs to the second category — and many consider it the most beautiful in the entire Azorean archipelago.

A 16th-century foundation, expanded in the 18th

This church’s original structure, also known as Candlemas Church, dates back to 1537, when it was moved from the small hamlet of Santo António. Significantly expanded in the 18th century — 1779 is often cited for the current facade — it kept its original structure and scale, but gained the exuberant Baroque style that makes it a landmark today.

A facade that became a postage stamp

The Baroque facade, decorated with basalt stone ornaments featuring “s” and shell motifs, is so remarkable it was chosen as the subject of a postage stamp issued by CTT in 1985. To the left rises the bell tower, covered by a tiled dome, with an inscribed stone — now sadly illegible — near the bell opening.

Three naves and seven altars

Inside, the church is divided into three naves with round arches and seven altars. The main altar is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Purificação, with an altarpiece that originally belonged to the Recolhimento de Santo António Church, in Vila do Porto. The side chapels are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Nossa Senhora do Rosário.

The Azores’ first Holy Spirit festival

This church is traditionally considered the first in the entire archipelago to celebrate the Holy Spirit Festivities — a symbolic milestone for a devotion that would become central to Azorean identity.
