Sea Transport in the Azores

The sea has always been the true road of the Azores, and it remains today the most practical way to connect the Central Group islands — Faial, Pico and São Jorge are just minutes apart by ferry, making it possible to visit all three without relying on internal flights.

Inter-island connections

Regular sea connections are concentrated mainly in the Central Group, where the closeness between Faial, Pico and São Jorge allows several daily crossings, especially in summer. Between the other island groups, flying remains the most viable option.

Madalena: Pico’s gateway

Madalena, Pico’s main port, serves as the arrival point for anyone travelling by ferry from Horta, on Faial — a crossing of under half an hour connecting two of the archipelago’s most visited islands.

Seasonality

Ferry frequency increases significantly in summer and drops in winter, so it’s worth checking schedules and booking ahead, especially for anyone planning an itinerary that combines several Central Group islands.
