Vila da Praia: Graciosa’s First Capital

Some towns lose their capital status and never get it back. Vila da Praia is a rare exception: after nearly 150 years as a plain parish, it became a town again well into the 21st century.

The island’s first municipal seat

Also officially known as the parish of São Mateus, Vila da Praia occupies Graciosa’s southeastern tip, along the valley separating the Caldeira from the rest of the island. It was here, not in Santa Cruz, that Graciosa’s first municipal power structure took shape — long before the island settled into the administrative arrangement it would keep for centuries.

Lost capital status to Santa Cruz in 1546

From 1546 onward, Santa Cruz-Guadalupe established itself as the island’s dominant hub, backed by the fertility of the region’s grain fields. Even so, the island kept a two-centre administrative structure, with the Praia municipality holding out until the 19th century.

Abolished in 1855, restored in 2003

The Praia municipality was abolished in 1855 (only enforced in 1867), its territory folded into the Santa Cruz da Graciosa municipality — and the settlement lost its town status as a result. It would only regain it by Regional Legislative Decree in 2003, nearly 150 years later, the settlement officially renamed Vila da Praia.

Houses, churches, and Flemish windmills

The town’s houses, its historic churches — including the Misericórdia Church, popularly known as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição — and the traditional Flemish-style windmills sit within a landscape dominated by the Caldeira volcano, with a dark-sand beach and, offshore, Ilhéu da Praia, a sanctuary for rare seabirds.
